Cartiers history includes an exotic story, which tells of how, in the mid-1930s, the Pasha of Marrakech ordered a waterproof watch from Cartier so that he could bathe in his swimming pool without losing track of time. That is how he is said to have inherited the first waterproof Tank watch, the only water-resistant model available at the time. The watch that takes its name from this anecdote was to appear much later, in 1943 a round watch with a waterproof case. Powerful, solid, with a large diameter and made purely of gold, it is originally fitted with a grid that serves to protect the glass from knocks, like some army watches. The watch is made watertight thanks to the cases screw-down crown and a cap (attached to a small chain) that screws over the winding crown to prevent water from leaking in. Sword-shaped hands, Arabic numerals, a russet leather strap Simple yet sovereign, the Pasha watch is an obvious expression of masculinity, even though in the 1980s women were to adopt it as a fashion accessory, which contributed to making it the bestseller it has since become.
